Iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) refer to thespectrum of consequences of iodine deficiencyin a population resulting from its deficit in soiland water. Consumption of crops and plantsgrown on iodine-deficient soils leads to IDD inpopulations solely dependent on this vegetation fortheir iodine requirements. When iodine intake fallsbelow the recommended levels, the thyroid may nolonger be able to synthesize sufficient amounts ofthyroid hormones.
