Polystyrene nanoplastic exposure leads to abnormal brain development by dysregulation of neural stem cell functions Recent evidence shows that a massive amount of micro- and nanoplastic particles originated from various plastic wastes is released to the natural environment and finally accumulated into various living organisms in diverse environmental sources, includ- ing oceanic surface water, ground water sources and soils. While there is an increasing environmental concern about microplastic pollution, the biological safety of these plastic particles has not been clearly investigated in terrestrial animals including human and other mammalians. In this study, we investigated the biologi- cal effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on brain development using cultured neural stem cells (NSCs) and the mice exposed to FITC- conjugated polystyrene nanoplastics during embryonic stages. We found that the exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics causes abnor- malities in NSC proliferation and multi-lineage differentiation. Our in vivo data demonstrate that polystyrene treatment at embryonic stages causes the structural alteration of the brain and the reduc- tion of neuronal precursor cells in hippocampal dentate gyrus. Collectively, these data show that polystyrene nanoplastics cause significant dysregulation of NSC functions resulting in abnormal brain development thus demonstrating that nanoplastic could be one of the environmental factors of brain developmental disorders.
