Developmental changes in motoneurons, however, are poorly understood. Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are lattice-like structures in the extra- cellular matrix that surround the neuronal somata and proximal dendrites. PNNs are enriched in chondroitin sulfate (CS) proteogly- cans, among which the disaccharide units of glycosaminoglycan chains are considered important for their functions. In the spinal cord, CS-A and CS-C, also designated chondroitin-4-sulfate and chondroitin-6-sulfate, respectively, are major components of CS proteoglycans.
