The Role of Standards in International Trade An interview with Peter Chase of the German Marshall Fund of the United States

For me, standards exist in an economy to assure generally recognized levels of safety and interoperability in both products and processes, making it easier for buyers of goods and services to feel confident they are getting a certain level of quality. Standards also exist for manufacturers to know what’s expected of them; and for others to evaluate "best practices" in how to do certain things. This becomes even more important in international trade, where the buyers and sellers may not know each other as well, and so may need more confidence in quality assurance.
