A virus was isolated by mechanical sap transmission from Amaryllis (Hippeastrum sp. Herb.) showing mosaic symptoms forming streak shaped localized on the upper half of the leaves, and from Shrimp plant (Justicia brandegeana Wassh. & L.B. Sm.) (Acanthaceae), showing chlorotic lesions on the leaves. The virus was identified as Cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) on the bases of biological and serological properties. In mechanical transmission, a range of indicator plants including Chenopodium amaranticolor Cost. & Reyn., Ch. quinoa Willd., Cucumis sativus L., Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Xanthi, Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Turkish, Datura stramonium L., Datura metel L., and Vigna unguiculata L. var Black eye, were dusted with carborandum and rubbed by a sap of infected plants. The virus induced systemic mosaic in cucumber, tobacco var Xanthi and Turkish, and D. stramonium plants, chlorotic local lesions on the inoculated leaves of C. amaranticolor, V. unguiculata var Blackeye. Local spots followed by yellow mottle symptoms on Datura metel and D. stramonium leaves. The virus is strongly reacting with CMV antibodies as determined by immunochromatography-ELISA on Flashkits. This is the first report about CMV on Amaryllis and Shrimp plant in IRAQ.
