Cardiomyopathy in Captive Owl Monkeys (Aotus nancymae)

Dilatedcardiomyopathy(DCM)wasidentifiedhistopathologicallyinacolonyofowlmonkeys(Aotusnancymae)overa15-yearperiod.Wecharacterizedtheincidenceofcardiacdiseaseechocardiographicallyinthecolonyovera14-monthperiod.Of77monkeys,21hadsystolicmyocardialfailure,andpostmortemexaminationconfirmedtheantemortemdiagnosisofDCMineightanimals.Monkeyswithaquestionablediagnosisatthefirstexaminationdemonstratedprogressionofdiseasewithtime.Leftventricularend-systoliccross-sectionalareaandleftventricularfractionalareachangeweretheindicesthatmostreliablydiscriminatedbetweennormalanddiseasedanimals.SerumcardiactroponinIconcentrationswerebelowdetectablelimitsinnormalanddiseasedmonkeys.TheapparenthighprevalenceofdiseaseinthiscolonyprecludedestablishmentofreferenceintervalsforAotusnancymae.Ourstudyprovidesthefirstcomprehensiveechocardiographicevaluationofowlmonkeyswithcardiomyopathy.
