摘要

Lynn Spigel's TV By Design: Modern Art and the Rise of Network Television sets out to investigate "the relationship between network television and the broader sphere of visual arts, especially modern movements in painting, graphic design, and architecture in cold war America" (p. 2). Modern art became a source for commercial programming during the 1940s, as well as an integral part of the networks' institutional identities. Internal art departments (with the aid of outside artists, designers, and architects) took part in the creation and maintenance of the visual continuity of the networks' public images. More than simply an exploration of the historical links between the arts and television during the cold war decades, Spigel's book engages with the equally fascinating and complex historical (as well as conceptually-linked) ties between art and commerce.
