Deregulation and Fairness in Transportation

I was giving a presentation to students in an executive development program the other day, and we were talking about the growth of low cost air carriers around the world. Long a phenomenon in the United States, they have become common in Europe and are now appearing in Asia as well. We were talking about the spread of airline deregulation globally, and how it opens the door so these carriers can start service. Deregulation involves a commitment on the part of a government to relinquish control over an industry in favor of free-market forces. Thus, in this case, transportation services are based on supply and demand rather than federal regulations.
