On Setting Priorities for International Security II: Economic and Security Implications of Natural Disasters

During the first two weeks of May 2008 the world has witnessed a cyclone striking Myanmar on 3 May, a powerful earthquake striking Sichuan Province in central China on 12 May and massive outbreaks of tornados striking the southern and Midwestern United States. Upwards of 100,000 have been killed by the cyclone, with perhaps an additional one to two million displaced, starving, and faced with disease. The magnitude 7.9 earthquake that hit Sichuan Province, China on 12 May has killed 30,000 people (count as of 27 May) and has displaced millions more.
