An explosive situation

Apart, perhaps, from biodegradable landmines - a concept that didn't really catch on - ammunition is bad for the environment. Its manufacture absorbs huge resources, its use is nearly always damaging and, if unused, its final disposal is difficult and costly. Disposing of the world's surplus stockpiles will take several more decades and, in the process, much harm will be done to the environment in parts of the world that are less well regulated than our own.
