Poland's navy has benefited greatly from the Ministry of National Defence's ongoing programme of modernisation. Indeed, changes across all three services have improved the efficiency and capabilities of the country's military.The improvement of the Polish Navy can partly be attributed to the integration of the country's forces into NATO since Poland's membership came into effect in 1999 - joining the Atlantic Alliance spurred on the modernisation of sea forces in order to meet the organisation's standards. Membership of the alliance has also had a major impact on the role and responsibilities of the Polish military forces, with recent policy from the Ministry of National Defence moving away from the priority of coastal defence towards a focus on international operations.
