The TKS liquid transpiration ice protection system - designed and manufactured exclusively by CAV - exudes de-icing chemicals through porous titanium panels built into the leading edges of aerofoils or other parts. This system originated during WWII, where it provided a form of ice protection compatible with armoured leading edges that were installed as a defence against barrage balloon cables. Early systems were effective but rudimentary; however, through technology improvements the system has evolved into the most effective method to protect aircraft where only limited power is available.The proven capability of the TKS system has resulted in its widespread use on 'general aviation' aircraft where it can gain full approval for flight into 'known icing' to the very latest certification requirements.
