Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats are a very real danger. The recent spate of terrorist attacks aimed at Europe (and the US) has led to increasing apprehension from national governments and the European Defence Agency (EDA) about the possibility of CBRN being used against troops and civilians. Advancing technologies in these areas and aspirations to utilise them mean that while the risk of a CBRN attack is low, it is not unfeasible. The effects and casualties brought about by such an attack could be devastating, and for this reason, CBRN strategy has continued to be at the forefront of policy and planning.
