On 2nd May, as part of the security preparations for London 2012, Typhoon aircraft flew into RAF Northolt to take part in Exercise Olympic Guardian. This was the first time since 1945 that the RAF had stationed its fighter aircraft at the west London station. Northolt, which has been an operational aerodrome since 1915, is still identified as a 'core defence site' and currently comprises two operational Wings together with lodger' units, including 600 (City of London) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force and 63 (Queen's Colour) Squadron RAF Regiment.
