Where there was once a handful of connections to the PC backplane, today there is a tangle of coax, phone lines, twisted pairs, cords, and ribbon cables. Each new hardware peripheral seems to come with its own interface, cable, and connector. Including the usual mouse, keyboard, monitor, and printer ports, mainstream desktop computers may sport up to 20 input/output ports, all located on the backside of the chassis. Add some beefy power cables and power strips and the morass has become an eyesore that can no longer be hidden behind a desk.
