Molecular-Cytogenetic Study of Miscarriages in Women with Reproductive Function Disturbances

The frequency of chromosomal aberrations in spontaneous miscarriages of the first trimester of pregnancy approximates to 50-60%. Karyotypes in the cells of chorionic villi in abortion tissue were examined using a combination of standard cytogenetic techniques and FISH-analysis of interphase nuclei with centromere specific DNA probes for the chromosomes 13/21, 14/22, 15, 16, 18, X and Y. Such comprehensive approach can be implicated for identification of chromosomal aberrations in spontaneous abortions. Our results indicate the necessity of careful study of genomes of spouses which experienced recurrent miscarriages, in particular before IVF treatment.
