Jacques Lacan's Broken Tablets: On Lacan's Living God, the Unconscious, and Gormann-Thelen's Formulation of Lacan's Broken Second ‘Tablet of Sexuation’

This article explores Lacan's ‘profound theological culture’, a term used by the French writer Philippe Sollers. It argues that Lacan is not only profoundly influenced by Hegel but also by Augustine. Lacan also needs to be seen as an ‘orate’ thinker, and not primarily as a writer. Against this background the article also examines how Lacan's paraconsistent logic is dependent on Hegel's logic, and is originally restricted to masculine sexuality. However, by applying a counter-Aristotelian Hegelian interpretation of Lacan's table of sexuation, another table of sexuation may be constructed 'from the pole where woman is situated'.
