The process of achieving goals in a predominantly volunteer organization is substantially different than in a traditionally-organized business organization. But, is not that different from how one gets things done in a matrix organization. The challenge in both a matrix organization and in a volunteer organization, such as AACE International, is the necessity to inspire people over whom one has no direct authority or incentive tools, such as the power of the paycheck. This article begins by examining the idea of traditional authority, and then the alternative forms of authority. Also discussed is how exercising those types of authority do and do not work in a volunteer organization. Specific techniques and insights are offered on inspiring people to volunteer for efforts within the Association. The article also discusses setting and achieving goals for growth and improvement, both for the Association and the individual. This was presentation DEV.03 at the 2010 Annual Meeting.
