Effective cost and schedule management are critical success factors for all projects. We work in a world where our available time and money is limited. Unfortunately, the majority of projects experience schedule slippage and subsequent cost overruns. This article will elaborate on examples of how a project manager can negatively impact the budget by making changes, during construction, that are not covered in the original estimate. The examples discuss the 'pros and cons' of accelerating a construction schedule and its effect on cost and schedule productivity. The included productivity tables and diagrams illustrate that increasing the hours worked per week has a drastic impact on the actual cost of work performed because of the increased overtime charges. Because of typical productivity in the field, increasing hours worked per week does not significantly improve schedule as it increases cost and, therefore, has a minimal return on its investment. This article was first presented at the 2011 AACE International Annual Meeting in Anaheim, Calif., as presentation CSC.580.
