Nonlinear continuous-discrete observers: application to emulsion polymerization reactors

A continuous-discrete observer is proposed for a class of nonlinear systems in this paper. One of the main interests of this observer is that it can be used to accurately estimate certain parameters for which one usually requires a model. It has been applied to an emulsion copolymerization reactor, and validated initially in simulation for the case of a semi-batch styrene-butyl acrylate reaction, and then for two test cases: (a) a batch copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate and (b) a semi-batch copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate.
