The Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, N.Y., is the world's largest multi-use space that combines scientific research, technology, and the performing arts. The 222,000-sq-ft building opened in October 2008, after nearly seven years of construction. The high-tech center is situated on a 45-deg hill overlooking the Hudson River on the edge of RPI's campus.
