Engineering winners serve as models for the industry

Originally installed in 1885 in Folkestone, the grade II-listed Leas Lift carries passengers between the seafront and the promenade and is one of the oldest water balance lifts in the UK. This great example of Victorian engineering operates by alternately filling and emptying water tanks fixed beneath the two lift cars.Crofton's brief was to restore the ageing structure while incorporating modern technological advances and health and safety requirements. Dilapidation surveys were carried out on the stations, the track itself and two cars. These revealed maintenance issues affecting the buildings, mechanical and electrical systems controlling the lifts, and structural movement affecting the upper station building and trackway.
