Our nation's No. 1 problem is budgetary. Although Washington is rightfully in the spotlight, the beam has begun to broaden to include states, counties and municipalities. Startling projections indicate how municipality and state pensions continue to consume budgets. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that Anaheim, Calif., spends 22 percent of its budget on pensions, and Providence, R.I., 50 percent. As an industry, we continue to press for a federal transportation bill that supports infrastructure construction and rehabilitation. Excellent transportation systems enable interstate commerce, promote economic growth, create jobs, keep the traveling public safe, and even contribute to national security. No argument there, and let's keep the pressure on.
