Machine Control Provides Efficiency

As engineering technology advances, contractors are benefiting from inventions that provide easier information gathering to inventions that reduce work processes. One example is the Global Positioning System, a satellite system that has resulted in products that have benefitted construction equipment users. GPS was originally designed for satellite navigation to pinpoint ships' and submarines' locations. The U.S. Department of Defense, with help from scientists, designed 18 satellites in three orbital planes with ground stations that received signals from these satellites as reference points. At the start of the system, the reference points calculated geographical locations that were accurate to meters. Today, that measurement is accurate to millimeters.
