T. L. Smith, the Concrete Mixer and Telsmith

Thomas L. Smith invented, patented, and produced the first tilting concrete mixer in 1900 and, with Paul W. Post, incorporated Smith & Post Co. on October 30, 1906, with Smith as president.Post retired in 1910 and sold his interests to Smith, and at some point, Smith & Post became T. L. Smith Co. According to Kwik-Mix Concrete Mixer Co. Catalog No. 92, Kwik-Mix was founded in 1911, and this ca. 1928 catalog's pages are stamped "Manufactured and sold by The T. L. Smith Co."In the 1960s, T. L. Smith Co. had a marketing affiliation with equipment manufacturer Essick Manufacturing Co., and sales literature was published over the Smith-Essick, Inc. name. T. L. Smith had developed the Turbin Mixer pan mixer in 1955. This line, along with its tilt mixer line, was sold to William Boles in 1979, and Boles founded Mixer Systems, Inc. to produce the machines. Smith also developed the first high-discharge transit mixer. Transit mixers were produced under the name of The T. L. Smith Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, through at least 1976, when it had a marketing office in Marion, Ohio. By 1989, transit mixer production had shifted to T. L. Smith Machine Co. in Springville, New York.
