Firstly, let me clarify a popular misconception which otherwise is of no technical significance: the 21st century will not commence until the year 2001. This is because the first day of the first century was not in year zero but year one. The bug is a year-2000 date problem relating to operations of many computers and automated control systems. These are both hardware and software relating to mainframes, mini-computers, PCs, operating systems, off-the-shelf packages, tailor-made programs, embedded systems and problems associated with communication with business partners.
