The large number of existing structures and the high cost of new construction have led to a situation where the strengthening, maintenance and rehabilitation of existing structures is becoming increasingly important. The ultimate strength checks required in particular in case of changes of use may necessitate the reinforcement of existing supporting members. To this end, the suitability of textile-reinforced concrete as strengthening material was investigated at the Technische Universitaet Dresden within the context of Collaborative Research Center 528 "Textile Bewehrungen zur bautechnischen Verstaerkung und Instandsetzung" (Textile reinforcements for structural strengthening and rehabilitation measures) funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft = DFG). The research findings and suitability for use were confirmed by a multitude of pilot projects all of which, however, required individual approval. A major step towards the simple use of textile-reinforced concrete in the field was successfully completed in the summer of 2014 when an initial approval for use was granted by the supervising authority. This enables clients, designers and companies to use textile-reinforced concrete as reinforcing material for interior structural-concrete components subject to bending stresses.
