Is Hpc Broken?

In 2005, we described high-performance computing i(HPC) education as broken.1 You might wonder, is it still? Tremendous advancements have occurred with various science portals (see, for example, the nanoHub article available on p. 17 of this issue). Yet, new degree programs continue to burst forth at a snail's pace. The Supercomputing Education Program, which is supported mostly by private-sector funding, continues to involve new groups and disciplines, but it's still just a trickle out of the flood of possible people and programs. Although we're gradually expanding the range of materials we use, we'd like to obtain a greater span of curricular modules, with academic levels ranging from high school through graduate school levels.
