Google Risks Losing Focus Amid Expansion

Google Inc started the new year the same way it ended the old one -- trying to expand its business to lessen its dependence on its lucrative search offering. This month's unveiling of the Google-branded and -designed Nexus One mobile phone, last summer's disclosure that the company is developing an operating system, and last September's release of the Google Wave collaboration tools pushed the company pretty far afield from its phenomenally successful search roots. Analysts agree that Google must find new markets to at least maintain its growth rate, but they note that any path it takes is fraught with risk. Those risks became evident after the January 5 launch of Google's smartphone, when angry users flooded message boards with complaints about confusing support options.
