Sally Chandler's New Literacy Narratives from an Urban University successfully adds to previous scholarship on literacy narratives (Brandt, 1998; Brandt, 2001; Hawisher et al., 2004; Heath, 1983; Selfe & Hawisher, 2004) by calling attention to intersections between participants' digital literacy acquisition and practices with their identity and the influences of print literacy. Chandler presented five literacy narratives from students recruited from an urban university in New Jersey. These narratives followed students through time and through school, home, and the workplace. What distinguishes this book from previous literacy narratives was the strong and in-depth narrative analysis (a sub-area of discourse analysis) of the story forms the participants' used to help researchers better understand literacy narratives. Furthermore, there was a pedagogical imperative embedded in the project which aims to articulate new strategies to help students understand more fully their own (digital) literacy development and values.
