摘要

While the general public might find the topics discussed in Rhetoric, Through Everyday Things intriguing, they are likely to be overwhelmed by the complex theories present in each chapter. Even rhetoric scholars will enjoy reading the chapters more if they have a strong background in new materialisms. I recommend this book for upper-level graduate students and for researchers who are interested in the rhetorical agency of things. Rhetoric, Through Everyday Things builds on existing scholarly debates while also expanding rhetoric's reach. Opening new ground for rhetorical studies and revealing objects' suasive agency, the authors analyzed a broad range of things using object-oriented ontology. The chapters included in Rhetoric, Through Everyday Things stem logically from both editors' philosophical inclinations. On Scot Barnett's faculty page, he stated his research interests include rhetoric's histories, digital rhetorics, and the intersections between rhetoric and philosophy. His interests inform his recently published book Rhetorical Realism: Rhetoric, Ethics, and the Ontology of Things (Routledge, 2017) and also this collection, co-edited with Casey Boyle. Boyle researches digital rhetoric, composition theory, and rhetorical history. He has published his work in well-known journals such as Kairos, Computers and Composition, and College English, and he is completing his first book Rhetoric as Posthuman Practice. In the introduction "Rhetorical Ontology, or, How to Do Things with Things," Barnett and Boyle explained how ontology advances rhetorical studies. Barnett and Boyle referenced numerous scholars to establish the theories and methods that facilitated their research. The editors claimed this project moves beyond the "epistemic and linguistic traditions that have defined rhetorical scholarship for much of the past century" (p. 3). Yes, things matter for what they do for humans: "Things provoke thought, incite feeling, circulate affects, and arouse in us a sense of wonder" (p. 1). But the editors argued things matter not only when influencing humans, but also when influencing other things. After describing "The Gathering Power of Things" (pp. 3-6), navigating "Things, Objects, and the In-Between" (pp. 6-8), and defining "Rhetorical Ontology" (pp. 8-11), the editors explained the collection's goal: "Rather than locate rhetorical action in human beings alone, the essays in this volume argue for an ontological approach to rhetoric that widens the circumference of rhetorical activity to include the vibrant ecology of things as occasioning possibilities for rhetoric and writing" (p. 11). Barnett and Boyle grouped fifteen chapters into four sections: "The New Ontology of Persuasion," "Writing Things," "Seeing Things," and "Assembling Things."
