Should search engines protect you against malicious sites?

Search engines are the portals through which most of us enter the wild west of the Internet, enabling us to access websites that we would otherwise be unable to find. Some of these sites are dodgy, and pose threats in various ways, for example capturing our email address to send spam, or infecting our PCs with viruses or keyclick loggers or spyware. This pivotal position of search engines, Google in particular, has made them targets for various other threats, such as click fraud, which has jolted the lucrative online advertising agency, and page rank theft or removal.
