I mostly use Google Docs when jotting notes, not least because I don't have to worry about saving them (Google Docs diligently saves as I type). However, there are still times when I use Notepad - it loads in a flash and has a distraction-free design. As with other Microsoft tools, however, Notepad lacks one thing in particular: tabs. Consequently, I often end up with multiple Notepad windows open, meaning I have to hop between them using Alt+Tab (wading through all my other open apps in the process). That's why I recently ditched Notepad for the similarly named, but much more powerful, Notepad++. This lets me open as many tabs as I like, then switch between them using the same Ctrl+Tab shortcut as my browser. Although Notepad++ is designed primarily for programmers, I've discovered many of its features are just as useful for simpler tasks, such as my note taking.
