The Kaohsiung Performing Arts Center: A Park Setting for a Trio of Performance Venues in Taiwan

The amazing and apparently endless appetite of cities around the globe for ever-new signature buildings is not limited to museums. There is also more and more interest for new concert halls and performing arts centers. The 9th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2004 made this clear in a special exhibition that went back to the mid 20th century—to Hans Scharoun's Philharmonie in Berlin, Jorn Utzon's Sidney Opera House and Le Corbusier's Philips Pavilion at the Brussels World's Fair of 1958. Currently, the highest-profile projects in the West are Frank Gehry's Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Rem Koolhaas' Casa da Musica in Porto, Protugal, and the planned Philharmonie in Hamburg by Herzog εt de Meuron.
