Nathan Phillips Square In Flux

In 2007, the City of Toronto staged an invited competition for the re-do of one of the city's most frequented, downtown public spaces, Nathan Phillips Square. Located directly in front of its storied city hall, the space serves as a venue for numerous public events, celebrating the city's diversity with ethnic festivals, and lending itself to ice skating in the winter months with the transformation of the reflecting pool to a solid surface. However, the original design dating back to 1965 is dated, had many flaws, and improvements as suggested in later competitions were never implemented. Moreover, after over four decades, the site had fallen into disrepair.
