The correct use of veterinary medicines is a core competence of the veterinarian and one of the Swiss Veterinary Associations' central concerns. In the current situation, in which the public reacts extremely sensitively when it comes to such matters, it can be said to represent a test bed for the credibility of veterinarians. As early as November 1995, a brochure entitled "Optimising the use of veterinary medicines" and a plan of action were published. Many of the measures proposed at that time have since been put into practice: treatment journal, quality assurance in veterinary clinics and practices (Swiss Quality Vet), field agreement regarding the integrated heard health management, good veterinary practice and active cooperation in the development of legislation on veterinary medicinal products are all a part of this. Additional activities include Europe-wide intensive information and continuing education. The directive relating to veterinary medicinal products - currently being studied by interested parties prior to its formal implementation - will result in a further reduction in the risks involved in the use of veterinary medicinal products. Food chemists and veterinarians are concentrating their joint efforts on consumers, who want to have healthy food from healthy animals which is free of residues and pathogens.
