In 1997 UK driving licence regs were changed to comply with EU legislation, and newly qualified car drivers could no longer drive anything above 3.5 tonnes. For many, this had been their first tentative steps towards obtaining an HGV licence, becoming accustomed to the driving characteristics of a laden truck. Would it not make sense to let car drivers behind the wheel of 7.5-tonners again -while keeping the vehicles in legislative scope?
