Time to understand the Brexit effect

Your letter of the week from Carl Stephens (CM 20 October) demonstrated the disassociation from reality and ugly isolationism that has gripped 'post-Brexit Britain' with worrying speed. Firstly, Carl links overseas aid - run by the Department for International Development - with the contributions that the UK makes as part of its budgetary commitment to the running of the EU.This is like linking the sales of fish fingers with the sales of bananas; they have nothing in common except for being sold by the same supermarket. Yes, once the UK leaves part of that budget will no longer be defined by EU standard contributions to developmental aid, but nowhere on the ballot did I see the option of 'Should the UK scrap the Department for International Development? Yes or No'.
