The idea that a haulier can offer someone a job as a truck driver without checking that they have a licence seems bizarre, but according to the traffic commissioners (TCs) it continues to happen. Failing to check drivers' licences is not just a professional risk for operators it can also lead to tragedy, as happened in the case of driver Barry Meyer, who pleaded guilty in April 2015 to causing death by dangerous driving after he hit cyclist Alan Neve with his tipper in London. During the trial it emerged that Meyer did not have a valid licence and had a history of serious driving offences. He had never even shown a licence to his employer.
