Cover and concealment— obviously great tools for self-defense, for it is very hard for someone to hurt you if he can't find you. Sure, there are instances when the best defense is to "stand and deliver," fighting it out "mano a mano," so to speak, but if at all possible, disengaging completely or, at the very least, moving to cover are the wiser and more successful tactics. Running away is, or should be, a no-brainer; all you lose is your pride. Going to cover, though, is an acquired skill for most humans; other animals are smarter. (Our two cats don't ponder what the strange noise is, they get to cover and then figure it out.)
