Close Combat- Can't Miss Or Will Miss

When you get out for some defensive handgun practice, at what distance do you shoot? Based on the piles of empty cases at my local gun club's outdoor range, I find the bulk of them at 5 and 7 yards. The detritus tapers off as the distance increases with few cases found past 12 yards. This "evidence" is reasonable for personal self-defense since, if there is a commonality among threats, most of them occur only after the bad guys get close enough to tell you what they want or to grab you to take what they want.
