When Jack Telnack returned to Dearborn in 1976 after his stint as head of design for Ford of Europe, his first assignment was the 1979 Mustang, the car that would replace the downsized Mustang II and restore the nameplate's sporty "ponycar" reputation. "That really was our first attempt at aero design," Telnack recalls of the '79 Mustang. Perhaps no one outside the Ford styling studios could have imagined that the new Mustang's success would substantially influence the look of the corporation's cars for years to come, including a Thunderbird that would rehabilitate the personal-luxury coupe's image, too.
