In the automobile business, positioning is everything. You can take that to the bank. In American Motors's case, it was painfully clear by 1961 that the company's four-year effort to sell its top-line Ambassador was not going as well as it should have. Introduced in 1958, the pricey midsize car with the full-size interior simply hadn't caught on despite its fancy interior trim, potent V-8 engine, and nine more inches of wheelbase than the more popular Ramblers from which it was derived.
