The Ford Mustang holds an enduring spot in American automotive history-heck, in American cultural history for that matter. In the Sixties it popularized stylish, affordable, and easily personalized compacts, a new class that not so coincidentally came to be known as "ponycars." The big-selling car's appeal was extremely broad: Depending on the customer, a Mustang could be soft and cute or, by the end of the decade, muscular and menacing. That's where the Mach 1 comes in, a car that Car Life magazine called "the first great Mustang," one with a name that still resonates today.
