The postwar Hudson was radically different from its prewar predecessors. While some new postwar designs still rode on a prewar chassis, the 1948 Hudson was completely new. Hudson moved from conventional body:on-frame to unitized construction, but what was really revolutionary about the new Hudson was that the floor was welded under the frame rails rather than above as on other cars at the time. Passengers stepped down when entering a Hudson, which is why its 1948-54 cars are commonly called "Step-downs." Hudson was able to market a car that was lower than the competition without sacrificing head- room or ground clearance. This not only helped appearance, but lowered the center of gravity, which was a boon to handling. Hudson dominated NASCAR racing in the early Fifties not because it had the most power, but because it could out-comer other cars.
