The Cars of 1963: A Motoring Mosaic

Viewing America's postwar economic boom through the prism of the automobile, two years stand out as mileposts: 1955 and 1965. They boggled minds with respective annual passenger-car production totals of 7.9 million and 9.3 million. Between them, though, there is another lesser known high point in 1963. Domestic production of 7.6 million units couldn't quite surpass the '55 tally, but model-year output of more than 7.3 million '63s was about 200,000 greater than the number of 1955-model cars, according to the Automobile Manufacturers Association, then the industry's joint trade group.
