The Lure of Luxury

If you have skimmed through the table of contents for this issue, it probably didn't escape your attention that we selected cars from rival luxury-market brands for the two photo features. It wasn't exactly an accident or a coincidence. When we were considering cars for those slots the chance to put them together was too tempting to pass up. A lot of things can make a car desirable—and, thus, truly collectible. Speed and power do a pretty good job of dominating the conversation these days. However, luxury has historically been another thing upon which a car's appeal has hung. Long before there were such things as muscle cars, the true prizes in the eyes of the collector hobby's early practitioners were the grand vehicles of the automobile's pioneering days. They were the cars that stood out from the pack then, and distinction and rarity are always going to be coveted.
