Lignin is one of the greatest threats to color and black-and-white photographs. Both its harmful chemical characteristics and its associated wood-pulp components can stain and mar photographic images. Lignin is the name given to a portion of a tree's wood make-up. On a basic level it is the glue that holds the wood fiber in place. This "glue" varies in chemical make-up and amount among the various tree species. In general, coniferous woods are higher in lignin than hardwoods, but this is not always the case.
