Miniatures―they're not just for dollhouses any more! With a history that goes back to Victorian times, when people made and furnished their own precisely scaled dollhouses, miniatures experienced a revival in the mid-20th century. In the creative industry, miniatures evolved as a segment with its own identity and needs, a hobby separate from mainstream crafts. As the 21st century dawned, however, miniatures began to move back into more widespread use in a variety of craft projects. Purists use the term 'miniature' to apply only to those re-creations that are measured exactingly 'to scale,' for example, 1″ on the miniature equals 1′ of a life-size version. In broader usage, however, miniatures can include everything from those scaled-down plants and furnishings to purses and shoes for dolls and the dimensional stickers so popular today.
