When scrapbook retailers were realizing unprecedented growth in profits, hardware was earning most of the dollars. You recognize those early winners: paper trimmers, decorative-edge scissors, luggage totes, huge pen sets. Then things leveled off; croppers had their equipment. They were still visiting stores, but their purchases shifted to consumables, such as paper and stickers, that did not carry the same hefty price tags as tools. Along came a new trend-embellishments. The industry produced every animal, vegetable and mineral you could possibly affix to a page. That frenzy quieted somewhat as companies merged and closed, and stores merged and closed, and consumers talked about less, not more.
